Tokonoma is a space for decoration in a Japanese-style room. It is often installed in the guest room, where hanging scrolls are hung and flowers are displayed. Next to Tokonoma, we sometimes use a slightly special pillar called Tokobashira, which makes use of the knots of trees, for example.
