You will see a step between the dirt floor where you put your footwear and the floor inside at the entrance. The crossbar that is horizontally passed over this step is called Agarikamachi. Also, you will find that Japanese houses have few strict partitions and walls. However, there is a culture in Japan that gives names to the parts that separate these spaces and is clearly aware of the partitions.
For this reason, the crossbars on the up stile are also symbolically good. Since it is a space where many people come and go, durable wood is selected.
上り框は、玄関の上がり口で履物を置く土間の部分と内部の床との段差に水平に渡した横木のことをさします。日本の家屋には厳格な間仕切りや壁は少ないですが、こうした空間を隔てる部分に名前をつけ、空間を明確に仕切る文化があります。
このため、上り框の横木にも、象徴的に良い気が遣われます。人の出入りの多い空間なので、耐久性の良い木材が選ばれます。
