“Irori” is a device installed in the room for handling open flames, and has been used for heating, cooking, lighting, and other purposes. As the Japanese kanji means, it’s a square fire pit inside the house.
Charcoal is basically used as fuel so that there is not much smoke, but firewood was also used in some cases. This smoke was used to make smoke, and by smoking the house itself, it also had the effect of prolonging the life of the house.
囲炉裏は、室内に設けられた直火を扱うための装置で、暖房や調理、照明などの目的で使われてきました。日本語の漢字が意味するとおり、部屋の中に四角い炉を設置します。
燃料は基本的に煙があまり出ないように炭を利用しますが、薪を利用することもありました。この煙を利用して燻製を作ったり、家自体を燻煙することで長持ちさせる効果もありました。
